Family health insurance; are your children still eligible for cover?

There are several reasons why adult children may no longer be eligible for cover under a family health insurance policy. The reasons can vary dependent upon the insurer and the policy itself.

Each insurer has their own detailed explanation as to how they define dependants under a family health insurance policy. We have listed some of the criteria that applies for children from four of the biggest health insurance providers:

AVIVA

Under an individual Healthier Solutions family health insurance policy, they are covered by the policy if they live at home, with no upper age limit.

Dependants under a group Solutions policy can stay on the policy up to the age of 24. They will be removed from the policy at the next renewal date following their 24th birthday.

Bupa

Bupa will cover children providing they remain a resident at the policy holder’s address, with no upper age limit.

AXA Health

Under an individual Personal Health policy children are covered by the policy providing they live at home, with no upper age limit.

Vitality Health

There is no upper age limit for children to remain on a family health insurance policy. This is for both individual or company schemes, Once they have reached 21 or over they will be charged an adult rate.

Criteria regarding dependants can vary between insurers. It is important to check to see which rules apply by reviewing their policy terms.

Once your child is no longer eligible for cover under your family health insurance policy, they can get cover in their own right.
