Breakfast; Bacon and eggs or a beetroot smoothie?

So it’s Sunday morning, you’re relaxed and you have already had an early morning cuppa. What is the breakfast of choice for a Sunday morning?

We all know that we really should eat healthily and not consume too much fat. Can we honestly say we opt for a beetroot smoothie because we like it?

Health Benefits of beetroot:

  • Rich in calcium and iron
  • Rich in Vitamins A and C
  • Excellent source of folic acid
  • Good source of fibre, manganese and potassium
  • Rich in fibre

In fact, beetroot has been ranked as one of the most potent antioxidant vegetables.

So, we know that beetroot is super good for us, and if your smoothie then includes other great stuff such as ginger, kale, blackberries and pear, then the health benefits are outstanding.

Calorie wise you would be looking at around 240 kcals per serving on a combination of this type.

Why do some of us still prefer to eat good old bacon and eggs?

Health benefits of eggs:

  • Both the white and yolk of an egg are rich in nutrients, proteins, vitamins and minerals.
  • They are a good source of high-quality protein
  • Egg yolk contains cholesterol, vitamin D and E and essential fatty acids
  • Rich in vitamin D, B6 and B12, selenium, zinc, iron and copper

Calorie wise, 1 medium boiled egg contains 84 kcals.

Health benefits of bacon:

We know that the list here is not going to be a long one. Although delicious there is not a long list of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. You know each rasher contains fat, salt and is a source of protein but I think that’s about as far as it goes.  The better quality of bacon you buy then the less water it will contain and the more amazing it will taste.

Truthfully if you have never bought real butchers bacon, you should give it a try.

Calorie wise you are looking at about 108 kcals per 2 rashers of standard supermarket bacon.

For me the choice of breakfast is nothing to do with the health benefits, I really do prefer savoury rather than sweet in the mornings. Other people may be different! I do have friends who love to have croissants or Danish pastries for breakfast and I am fairly sure these options would be even more detrimental to any type of healthy eating plan.

Essentially a smoothie doesn’t feel like a meal regardless of its nutritional value.  It just feels like a thick drink!

I guess it is a good job that weekdays are different. Thrusting us back to boring old basics such as cereal and porridge. My theory is that moderation has to be the key and hopefully my theory will prove to be right. I can’t ever see a time where I will choose a beetroot smoothie over bacon and eggs for my super Sunday breakfast but who knows what the future holds.
