Benenden Health is not private medical insurance. It doesn’t pretend to be, either. This provider has been around in the UK for many years, so what is Benenden Health cover, you might ask?
A Benenden Business Health policy provides easy access to private treatment for over 250 common procedures. Services are offered on a discretionary basis, and it works very much alongside the NHS. Unlike traditional health insurance, there is one low cost for all, making a business policy from Benenden Health an affordable benefit. If you are looking for a positive way to reward your team, then this policy is worth considering, especially if you are on a budget.
You may already have health insurance for your company directors and senior management. Now you may be able to afford a little something extra for the rest of your staff, and you will be amazed at how easy it is to implement for a group of 5 or more main members. Importantly, there are no exclusions for pre-existing medical conditions and, furthermore, no upper age restrictions apply.

It should be noted that the treatment of tuberculosis is the reason that Benenden Health was founded in 1905 (providing care for postal workers diagnosed with TB). If you are diagnosed with TB, they will cover the cost of approved treatment on an insured basis.
Which hospitals are covered by Benenden Health?
There are a number of hospitals in the UK where you can access medical treatment. Benenden Health also has its own hospital, based in Kent, rated ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission:

Do you have to get treatment pre-authorised?
Yes, you do. Just like a private medical insurance policy, it is important to pre-authorise any treatment. Your medical procedure must be recognised as clinically appropriate by NICE.
This is a policy that is affordable for all, and, on this basis, it will not cover you for certain high-cost procedures such as:
- Surgery for cancer related illness
- Heart surgery
- Emergency surgery
- Spine surgery
You can access a full list of approved procedures available online and this undoubtably makes the process easier to navigate.
Despite being unable to cover surgeries for cancer related illness, Benenden Health will offer cancer support to help your staff understand their cancer diagnosis. They will assist members with accessing services from the NHS as well as other organisations, providing a complete hand-holding service when a cancer diagnosis has been made.
How much does it cost per person for a Benenden Health policy for my staff?
Regardless of your employees’ age or pre-existing medical conditions, there is only one price, currently £11.90 per person per month. There is, however, a premium increase due in Q1 of 2023. Your employees must be over 16 and a UK resident to be eligible to join the plan.
Care planning and social care advice.
Unlike traditional health insurance policies, there is a care planning element available in the business plan from Benenden Health. If you find yourself in a position where you need to arrange a care package for yourself or a family member, where can you turn? In this policy, you have access to excellent support services from the care team. This is available to you for short or long-term care requirements. In particular, you can speak to an expert about yourself, your spouse, parents, or children over the age of 21. They can even assist if you need support relating to ADHD, autism or learning disabilities.
