Claims that won’t affect your NCD

If you have a Private Medical Insurance policy which offers a no claims discount (NCD) and you make a claim under your policy, your insurer will reduce the discount for your plan if not protected. There are some claims that you can make that won’t affect your NCD.

The insurers that offer a no claims discount have their own set of benefits that will not affect the no claims discount.

On this basis you may not have cover for all of the benefits listed below depending on the insurer you are with and their terms and conditions.

Cash benefits. This is money the insurer pays the policyholder.  Examples of this include NHS cash benefit and Childbirth cash benefit. Where available under your Health Insurance policy, cash benefits will not affect your NCD.

Hospice Donation. Insurers do not pay for hospice care but some insurers will make a donation if you are admitted to a hospice.

Dental and Optical benefits . Charges for eye tests, dental treatment and related services.

GP referred treatment. This is commonly for treatment by a physiotherapist, a chiropractor, an osteopath and an acupuncturist.

Travel Cover. This could be cover for emergency medical treatment while abroad.

There are other instances where your no claims discount may not be affected when you make a claim. For example, any claim that is lower than the excess amount and that the policyholder pays the full amount for.

Some insurers also state that if a claim is under a set monetary amount (usually £250) your NCD will not be affected.
