A closer look at Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

MLD UK is an association in the UK and is made up of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) practitioners. MLD is an advanced therapy where the therapist uses a range of techniques to move the skin in the direction of the lymph flow.

The origination of this complementary therapy is back in the 1930’s. Dr Emil Vodder created a range of movements which brought relief to some chronic conditions such as sinus congestion and catarrh. It has now moved forward and has gained acceptance throughout the world as a component in the treatment and control of lymphoedema.

To find out how manual lymphatic drainage is used for the treatment of lymphoedema, Cancer Research UK offer some helpful information.

MLD UK confirm that Manual Lymphatic Drainage is both preventative and remedial. It can also be used to enhance your well-being:

Below is a list from their website confirming what MLD can do:

  • It is deeply relaxing
  • Promotes the healing of fractures, torn ligament, sprains and lessens pain
  • Can help improve many chronic conditions, such as Sinusitis and rheumatoid arthritis
  • May strengthen the immune system as part of a “detox” treatment
  • Relieves fluid congestion
  • Is an effective component in the treatment and control of lymphoedema
  • Promotes healing of wounds and burns and can improve appearance of old scars
  • Minimises or reduces stretchmarks
  • Can be used to speed healing following cosmetic surgery

Some Cash Plan providers will offer cash back for complementary therapies.  You must ensure that your practitioner carries the relevant qualifications as approved by the Cash Plan provider.  Check your policy terms and conditions to ensure this is a complementary therapy covered by your own provider before you proceed with treatment.

Would you like to know whether you have any cover available for Manual Lymphatic Drainage on your current policy? The team at SMP Healthcare can help. If you are new to the Health Insurance market and would like to know more about any policy, please get in touch. If you have therapies cover on your private medical insurance, this is unlikely to include MLD. Therapies as part of your health insurance would be for common therapies, physiotherapy is just one example.
