A closer look at Nutritional Therapy

The British Association for Applied Nutrition and Nutritional Therapy (BANT) is the professional body for Registered Nutritional Therapists. It helps its members to gain the highest standards of integrity, knowledge, competence and professional practice in nutritional therapy and the Registered Nutritional Therapist.

If you have a Health Cash Plan policy in place you may have cover in place for Nutritional therapy along with many other complementary therapies.

What is Nutritional Therapy?

Nutritional Therapy is the application of nutrition science in the promotion of health, peak performance and individual care. Nutrients and other food components influence the function of the body. They protect against disease, restore health, and determine people’s response to changes in the environment. Moreover, under certain circumstances and for some people, diet can be a serious risk factor for a number of diseases.

Why Use Nutritional Therapy?

Nutrition and lifestyle approaches to healthcare have been shown to support the health of all the major systems of the body including:

  • Skeletal
  • Muscular
  • Nervous
  • Respiratory
  • Cardiovascular
  • Digestive
  • Excretory
  • Endocrine
  • Immune
  • Reproductive
  • Integumentary [skin, hair, nails].

Nutritional Therapists treat you as an individual with unique requirements. They will take time to define your personalised nutrition plan and never implement a ‘one size fits all’ approach.

As an example, you could visit a nutritional therapist for help in relation to the treatment of acne because there may be a nutritional deficiency. Just as your acne maybe due to hormone imbalance, your diet may also help you to control the symptoms. For this reason, you may find your consultation especially helpful.

How to choose a Nutritional Therapist?

BANT recommends that you choose a Registered Nutritional Therapist who has undertaken all the necessary training in order to understand the theory and practice of nutritional therapy. BANT-member Registered Nutritional Therapists are regulated by the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC). By choosing Registered Nutritional Therapists registered with the CNHC you can be confident that they are properly trained, qualified and insured, and that they abide by their code of conduct.

You can access a list of registered Nutritional Therapists via the BANT website:
