In-patient only health insurance cover

Are you looking at ways to keep the cost of your Private Medical Insurance down? If you are, an in-patient only policy may be the solution. You will have the peace of mind that your high cost in-patient treatment for eligible claims is covered . For out-patient treatment, diagnostics and consultations you can choose to either self-fund or use the NHS.

What would not be covered on an in-patient only policy?

– Consultations with a consultant/specialist

Diagnostic tests: Some policies will still cover eligible CT, MRI and PET scans as an out-patient

– Treatment by a specialist

– Specialist/GP referred treatment by a physiotherapist, chiropractor, osteopath etc (although some policies do offer a therapy add-on, where cover for these types of treatments can be obtained)

When you buy an in-patient cover only policy there may be an element of out-patient cover included. It will depend on the insurer you have chosen and will be shown in the relevant policy documents.

Is In-Patient only cover right for me?

With an in-patient only policy you will either have to self-fund or use the NHS for the your out-patient treatment. It really is important that you know what that will mean. If you choose to use the NHS for out-patient treatment there may be a waiting list. You are not guaranteed a quick turnaround on NHS appointments. Opting to self-fund out-patients treatment could end up being expensive. If your consultant asks you to have a sequence of out-patient diagnostic tests then you could be looking at a bill of 100’s of pounds.

Are there other ways to reduce the cost of Private Medical Insurance?

There are many other options for you to look at for reducing your Health Insurance premium.  In-patient only cover really is not the first choice for many people. You can look at increasing your policy excess, applying a six week option or changing your hospital list in the first instance. You may choose not to include cover for Mental Health treatment, this can also reduce the cost of your policy.
