Health insurance covering dental claims

When you choose your private medical insurance policy, have you considered the benefit in opting for a policy that will offer you a level of cover for dental claims? A policy that offers you cover for dental claims is often provided on a cash back basis.

More of us are looking to private dentists for our treatment which inevitably results in an increase in cost. Essentially this is because fewer NHS dentists are open to new patients. If you do not want to take a stand alone dental policy, there are a number of health insurance providers who will offer a dental add on to their policies.

Where you can buy a Health insurance policy covering Dental Claims

*A good example would be the AVIVA dental and optical add-on for company schemes, known as Option 4. For a minimal additional cost, members of a Solutions health insurance policy would have access to:

  • £500 routine dental treatment
  • £600 dental accident
  • £300 optical treatment.

Regardless of the excess you have chosen on your health insurance, there is a £50 excess applied to Option 4. The excess would apply to each claim made.

If you are looking at individual policies there are also a number of providers who will offer a dental benefit, including AVIVA, AXA PPP, BUPA and Vitality Health.

As a general rule there will be an element of cover in the core part of your policy for oral surgery performed in a hospital. This is limited to specific procedures and any claims for oral surgery should be pre-authorised. Pre-authorising your treatment with your insurer will enable you to be sure that cover is available.
