What is Shiatsu Massage Therapy?

The Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT), the UK and Ireland’s leading and largest professional association for therapists confirms that Shiatsu is a form of massage developed in Japan in the early 1900s. This massage is applied through loose clothing. Moreover it is said to be like acupuncture – only without the ‘needles’.  It involves gently working specific points on the body, with the aim of restoring the flow and balance of energy which promotes health and well-being.

What to expect before and during a Shiatsu massage?

Before your sessions begins you will receive a full consultation with your shiatsu practitioner. They will ask you a few questions about why you are seeking Shiatsu discussing any symptoms you have. Essentially they will want to know what you hope to gain from your sessions. They may also ask questions about your lifestyle and mood in order to gain a clearer understanding of your concerns.

Following your consultation, treatment will normally take place on a padded floor mat or futon. Importantly, your practitioner will ensure you are positioned comfortably before applying a variety of different techniques. This may include holding, or applying pressure with the palms, thumbs, finger, elbows, knees or feet. Treatment may also involve rotating or stretching the limbs and joints, where appropriate.

What are the benefits of Shiatsu?

As shiatsu is a holistic and natural therapy it can benefit most people. Many use it to help relieve everyday stresses, aid sleep and promote relaxation. Shiatsu also supports patients whilst receiving treatment for a range of health issues and to help them maintain their general wellbeing. Even if you are fit and healthy, the therapy can promote overall well-being.

Can you claim on your Health Insurance for this type of massage treatment?
