What is an MRI scan?

The letters MRI stand for (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and this diagnostic test is a type of scan which  uses magnets and radio waves to produce detailed pictures of the inside the body. These images can help medical professionals diagnose and monitor many different medical conditions.

What parts of the body is an MRI scan suitable for?

They can be used to examine most parts of the body including:

– brain and spinal cord
bones and joints
– breasts heart and blood vessels
– internal organs, such as the liver, womb or prostate gland

What should I expect when having an MRI scan?

If you have an MRI scan you will be asked to lie flat on the bed which will move through the scanner by a controlled radiographer who will help position you on the bed either head first or feet first, depending on which part of the body they are scanning.

During the scan you will experience some noise which will be the sound produced by the electric current, but you will be given earplugs or headphones to wear to reduce the noise experienced.

How long will an MRI scan last?

A scan can last 15 to 90 minutes, depending on the examination. During the private MRI scan, you will be asked to breathe quietly and normally and keep very still as any movement will blur the images.

Can I get this type of scan on the NHS?

The NHS waiting times can vary from weeks to months; so with this in mind you could opt to pay privately for an MRI scan, however a private MRI scan can cost somewhere around £400 to £1,000 depending on the area you live in and the hospital you attend.

If you have Private Medical Insurance MRI scans are usually covered, subject to eligibility and policy cover, all of which SMP Healthcare Ltd can help clarify for you. Contact us today on 01245 929129 or email enquiries@smphealthcare.com.
