Diabetes is a common medical condition. Statistics from www.diabetes.org.uk confirm that as many as 1 in 15 people in the UK have diabetes of some type. 90% of these suffer with Type 2.

All types of diabetes share a common factor. They cause you to have too much glucose (sugar) in your blood. You do need some glucose because it gives you energy.

You also need a hormone called insulin because it allows the glucose in your blood to enter the cells and fuel your body. The pancreas is the organ that makes insulin. If you have diabetes, this does not happen correctly.

Type 1 means that you cannot produce any insulin

Type 2 means that you either do not make enough insulin or it does not work effectively.

There is also a condition called prediabetes. This means that you have high blood sugar but not high enough to be diagnosed with stage 2 diabetes. You are however at a high risk of developing it.

High blood pressure, smoking and being overweight are all factors that will increase your risk of developing this medical condition (type 2).
