Healthy Eating and why it is good for us?

The benefits of a balanced and varied diet are an important step towards a healthy and happy lifestyle.  Vitamins and minerals are vital to boost immunity and healthy development. That is why we should concentrate on our efforts towards healthy eating.

Eating healthily can also protect the body against certain types of diseases, particularly non-communicable diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, some types of cancer and skeletal conditions. Gout is an arthritic condition that can be controlled by eating a healthy diet. Making positive lifestyle changes could prevent an attack of gout and stop it from coming back.

Eating lots of fruit and vegetables, exercising and reducing your fat, sugar and salt intake all help towards achieving a healthy lifestyle.

Some steps to healthy eating

Eat bread, whole grains, pasta, rice or potatoes several times a day.

Control fat intake (not more than 30% of daily energy) and replace most saturated fats with unsaturated fats.

Replace fatty meat and meat products with beans, legumes, lentils, fish, poultry or lean meat.

Choose a low-salt diet.  Your total salt intake should not be more than one teaspoon (5g) per day, including the salt in bread and processed, cured and preserved foods.

Use milk and dairy products (kefir, sour milk, yoghurt and cheese) that are low in both fat and salt.
