Most UK health insurance providers offer cover for mental health treatment. You will be given the option to include or exclude this benefit.

There are a number of conditions that would be treated under the mental health benefit option including.

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Schizophrenia
  • Bipolar
  • Eating disorders
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

The above list is not exhaustive.

Your cover can be shown as in-patient, day-patient or out-patient treatment. If you suffer with OCD as an example, it is likely you will be recommended for talking therapies treatment in the first instance. This is because it is a recognised, effective treatment for this condition.

If you have a more serious condition that affects your every day life, you may then be referred for a consultation with a specialist/ psychiatrist.

Mental Health issues are not something you should feel embarrassed about. Many people suffer with conditions of this type.

Some insurers will cover you for mental health condition caused by addiction however, this is not the case across the board. You need to check your policy terms and conditions because addictions could be excluded.
